How I Met Your Mother's characters may seem different from those in The Office, but several big similarities can be drawn between groups in each.

The season 2 renewal of Hulu's How I Met Your Father has brought its predecessor, How I Met Your Mother back into focus. As pop culture pundits and Redditors work out the differences and similarities between the two shows, it's pertinent to state that each show's characters emerge as the driving force in their respective premises. But HIMYF and HIMYM are not the only shows that boast a fantastic cast, and in fact, 21st-century American television has churned out other well-known character-driven TV shows. Case in point: the Steve Carell-led mockumentary sitcom The Office.

How I Met Your Mother and The Office began in the same year - 2005 - but little seems to connect them beyond that. However, while the two shows are different in tone and comedic style, it turns out that counterparts exist between them.

The Office's Katy Moore, who was the titular character of season 1 finale, "Hot Girl" and who dated Jim until the end of "Booze Cruise," finds her counterpart in Ted's ex, Natalie. Jim's mistreatment of Katy is one of the angering aspects of the otherwise fun-filled, boisterous episode. She rightly called him out, stressing that he shouldn't have brought her as his date if he wasn't into her.

Natalie's mistreatment in "Return of the Shirt," likewise, is an anger-inducing plot point from HIMYM. Ted chose the wrong moment and occasion to break up with Natalie. He ditched her on her birthday, not once but twice in the show. Like Katy, Natalie too knocked some sense into Ted, going over every little detail of how he broke her heart three years ago and three years later. Natalie and Katy make a great pair because both of them were smart, sensible, friendly, and cheerful women that deserved better.

The Office's Creed Bratton finds his ideal counterpart in the barista and the low-key How I Met Your Mother hero, Chloe. Whilst Creed was a regular on The Office, Chloe made her guest appearance in "Swarley." Notwithstanding that, she and Creed both had a dark, broody aura.

Though Chloe was far more chirpy than Creed ever was for 9 seasons, she did scare everybody in the gang by wrecking Marshall and Ted's apartment at the end of "Swarley." Creed is never shown intentionally damaging property, but he does like to pop up in blood-covered shirts and run when he hears cops are around. Creed and Chloe were equal parts entertaining and mysterious characters, and that's what makes them a good match.

Walter Bernard Sr. and Robin Charles Scherbatsky Sr. are among the most hated TV characters for similar reasons. While the former is one of the worst relatives on The Office, the latter is a low-key villain from How I Met Your Mother.

Walter Bernard Sr. is a pretentious, demanding father who thinks of Andy as his good-for-nothing son. His counterpart, Robin Scherbatsky Sr., chooses his ego over his daughter Robin's happiness and projects his insecurities onto her. He forces her to learn fishing and hunting and she, in turn, struggles to win his approval all throughout. Both characters are passive-aggressive, less empathetic, disapproving fathers who deserve every bit of fans' wrath.

The Office's Jan Levinson matches with HIMYM's guest character, Blah Blah because much like her, she too had a creative bent of mind. Blah made custom handbags, whereas Jan started her own scented candle business after she was fired from her job. Though Blah was only around for the episode, "How I Met Everyone Else," she did manage to rattle everyone with her intense presence. She was a ball of frenetic energy, just like her The Office mate, Jan.

The two characters are also similar because both of them were argumentative people who didn't mind picking a fight or making people uncomfortable. Jan frequently argued with Michael Scott, whereas Blah provoked Robin into a fight at MacLaren's Pub.

There's many a time on The Office when Karen Filippelli felt like an underrated character. She shares quite a few traits with her HIMYM counterpart, Robin. While Karen played a side character on her show, she definitely was one with main character energy. Watching her knock sense into her sometimes-insufferable boyfriend, Jim, and leaving Dunder Mifflin Scranton for a bigger role was particularly exhilarating. Karen wasn't afraid of a challenge, and it's something she has in common with Robin, who traveled to Argentina and briefly moved to Japan.

Karen and her HIMYM match share the same sarcastic sense of humor, wit, and intelligence. They also give off a cheerful vibe which made them fun additions to their group dynamic.

Hard-working professionals, sensible partners, and good mothers are the qualities that best describe Pam Beesly and her mate, Lily Aldrin. But more than these qualities, it is their common love for art that makes them perfect counterparts.

Though Pam worked a corporate job, her real passion was art. She also liked to do illustrations and a closer look at her art pieces on The Office reflects her passion and dedication. Pam's HIMYM counterpart, Lily was a kindergarten teacher and an amateur painter who at season 1's finale moved to San Francisco to pursue her artistic interests. Pam and Lily would make a great pair if the fictional universes of HIMYM and The Office were to ever cross paths.

Dwight Schrute and his HIMYM counterpart, Barney Stinson often used their smarts and intelligence for evil purposes. Though both of them care deeply for their friends, it hasn't gone unnoticed that they did some pretty questionable things in their respective shows.

While Barney stole Marshall's dates and posed as Ted, his evil twin, Dwight sabotaged Jim countless times and was the only Dunder Mifflin, Scranton employee who showed excitement about downsizing rumors in season 1. Best described as cunning and scheming characters, the men line up well with each other.

The lovable Jim Halpert and his HIMYM match are no saints. Their fixation on one woman (Pam and Robin, respectively) held them back a lot of the time. Jim found perfect partners in Katy Moore and Karen Filippelli but his obsession with Pam stood in the way every single time.

In a similar manner, Ted's fixation with Robin restricted his development. Truth be told, Jim was a horrible boyfriend to Katy and Karen, as was Ted to his exes, Natalie and Victoria. Jim and Ted make a good match because they have a similar set of flaws that include selfish behavior, stubbornness, and perfectionism. These traits cost them time and happiness, even if they did eventually find their way to one that makes them happy.
